A Landmark Evening in Mayfair
On Wednesday, 14th May 2025, Woodbury House proudly unveiled ‘War & Peace’, a powerful new documentary chronicling the latest solo exhibition by the legendary Blek le Rat — widely recognised as the ‘Father of Stencil Graffiti’. Produced by Woodbury House, the documentary premiere offered a reflective lens into the artist’s evolution and the poignant themes explored in his most recent body of work.
The premiere took place at The Soho Hotel, right in the heart of London. It welcomed an intimate guest list of collectors, journalists, curators, artists, and long-time supporters of both Blek le Rat and Woodbury House. Attendees enjoyed a first look at the documentary, which captures both the creative energy and conceptual depth of ‘War & Peace’ — Blek’s largest solo exhibition to date, held at our Mayfair gallery.

About the Documentary
The documentary delivers a rare perspective on Blek le Rat’s life, creative process, and enduring philosophy. With candid interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary offers unparalleled insight into his methods, motivations, and the emotional and historical narratives behind the work. It traces the artist’s journey from the streets of Paris to the gallery walls of London — while confronting universal themes of war, sacrifice, resilience, and the human cost of conflict.
Among the highlights is the ‘Stallion of Sacrifice’ series, a deeply symbolic body of work reflecting on the archetype of the soldier — powerful, yet vulnerable. In total, the exhibition featured over 50 original artworks spanning stencils, paintings, and prints, all unified by Blek’s pursuit of peace through artistic resistance.

A Thought-Provoking Q&A
After the screening, guests were invited to stay for a live Q&A session led by Woodbury House Founder Steven Sulley. In a rare public conversation, Blek le Rat shared personal reflections on the stories that shaped the exhibition — including memories from his childhood in post-war France and his father’s wartime experiences, which profoundly influenced the tone and subject matter of ‘War & Peace’.
The discussion also explored Blek’s ongoing commitment to using public space as a platform for free expression, and his thoughts on how graffiti continues to evolve in today’s art world. The audience engaged in thoughtful dialogue, asking questions about censorship, the role of activism in art, and what keeps Blek inspired after decades of creative output.

An Intimate Reception at Woodbury House
Following the Q&A, guests were welcomed back to Woodbury House in Mayfair for a private post-screening reception. Returning to the very space where the original ‘War & Peace’ exhibition was staged, attendees had the opportunity to revisit the works seen in the documentary — now with deeper insight into their origins and meanings.
The evening also unveiled a number of original Blek le Rat works that had never before been shown in London, adding a further layer of discovery for collectors and enthusiasts. With champagne flowing and conversation buzzing, the gallery transformed into a space of both reflection and celebration — a fitting close to an unforgettable evening.

Why ‘War & Peace’ Matters
In a time dominated by quick content and short attention spans, ‘War & Peace’ encourages us to slow down and reflect. It invites viewers to engage with art that doesn’t just decorate a wall but tells a story — one rooted in personal truth, collective memory, and resistance.
More than a documentary, this film stands as a cultural document — capturing the legacy of an artist who changed the way we see and use public space, and who continues to challenge the status quo with every stencil.
