He Changed the Course of Contemporary Urban Art
Long before stencil-based street art became globally recognised, Blek le Rat was pioneering the medium on the streets of Paris.
Beginning in the early 1980s, his interventions introduced a refined stencil technique that combined social commentary, classical influence, and urban immediacy.
Banksy famously remarked:
‘Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only 20 years earlier.’
Blek’s importance lies not simply in influence — but in authorship.
He helped create the visual language others later popularised.
