Gallery Tour | ‘Growth’ by Gary Stranger | Woodbury House, Mayfair

Step inside ‘Growth’, as Woodbury House presents Gary Stranger’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, staged at its flagship space in Mayfair, London.

Over thirty new works reveal the full range of a practice built on the letterform, from large scale canvases approaching four metres to intimate pieces on wood and paper that sit in the palm of a hand. Read together, they form the vocabulary of a life under examination, some turned inward toward stillness and repair, others facing the noise the artist has stepped back from.

Stranger’s journey began in the mid-1990s through graffiti, earning him a place in MSK (Mad Society Kings), one of the most respected graffiti crews in the world. Over three decades he has evolved that foundation into a visual language rooted in typography but liberated from its utilitarian purpose. His work is held in the collection of STRAAT, Amsterdam’s museum for street art and graffiti, and he has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. His debut solo exhibition with Woodbury House, ‘Self Help’, opened in August 2025 to a strong collector response.

At the centre of ‘Growth’ is a material contradiction: chalk, the bedrock of the South Downs where Stranger lives and works, made into a paint built to last, something fragile made to endure. Colour throughout is drawn from that same landscape, seaweed, kelp, and the milky aqua of the sea where chalk meets water, while three works go further still, drawn with the sun itself, burned into wood through a magnifying glass.
