‘Growth’, the new solo exhibition by Gary Stranger, is now on view at Woodbury House, 29 Sackville Street, Mayfair. It is the most personal body of work of the artist’s career, and it runs until 30th September 2026. More than thirty new works hang across the gallery, each one available to acquire, and the doors are open to everyone.

The Exhibition

Three decades of hand-painted precision built Gary Stranger’s name. ‘Growth’ is what happened when he chose to loosen his grip. The brushwork is coarser, the shapes bolder, the letterforms as disciplined as ever but finally allowed to breathe. It is the work of an artist deliberately trading control for feeling, and it makes this the strongest room he has ever hung.

The exhibition moves from intimate works on paper to canvases approaching four metres, shown here for the first time. Some are painted with a paint Stranger made himself, chalk from the South Downs ground and bound by hand. Three were made with no paint at all, their marks burned into wood with sunlight focused through a lens.

The Landscape in the Work

Every work in ‘Growth’ carries the place it was made. Stranger lives and works on the South Downs, and the show’s palette is taken from what surrounds him there. Seaweed greens from the shoreline. The chalky aqua of the Channel on a clear day. The parched golds and purples of the downland in late summer. Even the ground he walks is in the work, because the Downs are chalk beneath the soil, and it is that chalk he grinds into paint. A material that washes away, turned into something built to last. The word of the title is not decoration. It is what the work records.
