On Thursday 20th August, the evening before ‘Growth’ opened to the public, Woodbury House welcomed collectors, press and friends of the gallery to Sackville Street for the private view, held in the presence of the artist. The exhibition is now on view until 30th September 2026.

The First Look

The evening announced itself before the work did. Live piano drifting through the gallery, champagne at the door, and a room filling with people about to see a body of work no one outside the studio had seen. What waited on the walls was the most personal exhibition of Gary Stranger’s career. Paintings in hand-ground chalk from the South Downs. Works burned into wood with focused sunlight. Canvases approaching four metres, seen for the first time that night.

The Artist in the Room

Gary Stranger spent the evening in front of the work, not beside it. Guests who had watched him talk through the show in the film released ahead of the opening now heard it first-hand, the chalk, the sun, the deliberate loosening of three decades of precision, told in front of the paintings themselves.

Works Finding Homes

By the end of the evening, and as has become custom with Gary Stranger, many of the works had found new homes before the exhibition opened its doors to the public. The remaining works are on view now, each available to acquire, and enquiries have continued since the night.
